The Office of Minority Health (OMH) is hosting a webinar, Niños Saludables: Addressing Childhood Obesity among Latinos, in collaboration with the CDC/DNPAO, Salud America, Unidos US, and OMHRC. The webinar will highlight prevalence data on the increase in obesity in Latino children as well as explore the role factors such as behavior, culture, and environment play. It will feature a panel of partner federal agencies and stakeholders and will be on October 12th, from 2:00 – 3:00pm EDT.

The CDC released their first-ever Early Care and Education (ECE) State Indicator Report in an effort to highlight state efforts towards addressing childhood obesity in the ECE setting. With 6 out of 10 children aged 3-5 years being cared for in non-parental care arrangements, there is a need for obesity prevention efforts that reach children at an early age.

Adolescent Obesity Demonstrates Significance of Early Childhood

A new study in the United States finds that a child’s “weight fate” may be determined by age 5.  Nearly half of children who were obese by the eighth grade were already considered overweight by the time they started kindergarten.  Researchers believe that the critical window of opportunity to prevent obesity is much earlier in a child’s life, with the study showing that indicators for risk for obesity begin at a very early age.
