The American Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, through the Voices for Healthy Kids initiative have opened a new grant opportunity. This collaboration aims to make effective strategic investments in ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy issue campaigns with hopes of increasing the public policy impact on healthy weight and living among children. Through the engagement, organization, and mobilization of people, this initiative seeks to help all children grow up at a healthy weight.

CDC Releases First-ever Early Care and Education State Indicator Report

The CDC released their first-ever Early Care and Education (ECE) State Indicator Report in an effort to highlight state efforts towards addressing childhood obesity in the ECE setting. With 6 out of 10 children aged 3-5 years being cared for in non-parental care arrangements, there is a need for obesity prevention efforts that reach children at an early age.

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 of every 5 (17%) children in the United States has obesity and certain groups of children are more affected than others. National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month brings about an opportunity to learn about ways to prevent and address this serious health concern.

Journal: Prenatal stress can increase risk of overweight in adulthood

Researchers from Aarhus University have found that severe stress levels in the mother during pregnancy can have adverse effects on the health of the child.  Previously they had shown that the risk of being overweight or having obesity as an adult increases. But in their recent studies, this prenatal stress was correlated with weight problems for the children in as early as 10 years of age.  Some think that this information is a key part in understanding the childhood obesity epidemic.

Last Thursday, May 29, 2014 the House Appropriations Committee passed an agriculture budget bill that, as the New York Times notes, "included nearly $21 billion for child nutrition that would allow schools to opt out of White House nutritional guidelines in 2012." Obesity Among Low-Income, Preschool-Aged Children--United States, 2008-11

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have released a new report about the obesity epidemic among young children, finding that about one in eight children ages 2-5 is obese in the United States. The report also found that overweight or obese preschoolers are five times more likely to become overweight or obese adults. However, obesity rates among low-income preschoolers have leveled off from 2003-2008 and now appear to be falling, and the percentage of obese preschoolers declined slightly in 19 of the 43 states and territories studied.

Regional Nutrition and Physical Activity Programs Grant

Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is calling for proposals for "Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity," Round 8 to support research on environmental and policy strategies with strong potential to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity. The call for proposals is for two funding opportunities: the Round 8 grants and RWJF New Connections grants, aimed at providing advocates, decision-makers, and policy-makers with evidence to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic. Concept papers are due by July 10, 2013.
