Between 1999 and 2013, the amount of prescription painkillers dispensed in the U.S. quadrupled. In roughly the same period, both painkiller-related deaths and heroin-related deaths quadrupled as well. This is no coincidence—people who are addicted to prescription opioids are 40 times more likely to abuse heroin. The U.S. is now facing an epidemic of opioid abuse, but promising interventions could turn the tide.

CDC's Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention for States Grant Program

State recipients of the Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention for States grant program have been announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The objective of this program is to help states who are seeing an epidemic in prescription drug overdose. There were 16 states that received funds from the program, one of them being Nebraska.

This website includes the project aim, companies that are currently participating in the program, and blog stories/discussions about how each company incorporated this program into their workplace. 

Think, Act, Grow (TAG): Adolescent Health Initiative

An Adolescent Health Initiative, titled Think, Act, Grow (TAG) has been released by the Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Adolescent Health (OAH). This national program aims to create healthy development and outcomes, including decreased teen births, smoking, and substance abuse, amongst the 42 million adolescents living in the U.S. Most of the causes of death among the adolescent population are largely preventable.
