The National Physical Activity Plan released The 2017 United States Report Card on Walking and Walkable Communities. The report assesses the extent to which the U.S. population and communities achieve selected standards for walking as well as for providing physical and social supports for walking behavior. Highlighted findings include the following:

  • American adults earned a "C" grade for adult walking behavior, with 63.9 percent of the group walking for work, transportation or leisure.
  • American communities received a “D” grade for walkable neighborhoods
  • American communities received an “F” grade for public transportation and for safety
