A recent article, States With Prescription Drug Monitoring Mandates Saw A Reduction In Opioids Prescribed To Medicaid Enrollees, published in Health Affairs discusses promising findings resulting from utilization of prescription drug monitoring programs. Results from their analysis indicate that in 2011 to 2014, adoption of state mandates for prescriber registration or use were associated with a 9 to 10 percent reduction in population-adjusted numbers of Schedule II opioid prescriptions received by Medicaid enrollees and Medicaid spending on these prescriptions. This effect was largely associated with mandates of registration rather than with mandates of use. These findings support the use of this effective and relatively low-cost policy.
