CityLights is CityMatCH's quarterly newsletter, published under a cooperative agreement with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau/Health Resources and Services Administration and distributed nationwide by CityMatCH. Recent issues have included Building Communities through Collaboration, Tipping the Scales of Justice: Advancing Health Equity in America, and Underutilized MCH Data Sources. Regular features include data reports from our membership sites and national urban MCH partners, profiles of urban MCH programs, regional news, and articles from urban MCH program directors and leaders. The CityMatCH Annual Urban Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Leadership Conference opened on September 10, 2005 in Fort Worth (TX) amid aftershocks from Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst natural disasters in the nation’s history. Conference organizers debated whether to cancel or postpone the conference, and in the end concluded there was no better time than the present to come together to share, learn, work, and heal. Some modifications were made to the Conference to reflect the gravity of the hurricane.

Promoting Healthy Weight: Local Health Departments Take Action

Rates of overweight and obesity in the U.S. are fast rising and crosscutting, without respect for age, gender, race, culture, ethnicity. Adverse impacts linked to overweight and obesity suggest a public health approach is needed. CityMatCH membership concurs: the most recent embership assessment verifi ed that healthy weight is a top priority for their health departments.
